Paul attended St. Mary's High School in Winona and also attended St. Mary's College in Winona. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1935 with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry

Paul was a research chemist. His first job was with Consolidated Gas, then with Chrysler and finally with Ethel Corporation.

He had many outside interests and hobbies including reading, shortwave radio and model trains. Like his father, he could play the clarinet His main hobby was stamp collecting and he had a special collection of railroad stamps. His interest in genealogy was passed to his son Paul and his nephew, Bill.

Paul also knew of Bill's interest in the Civil War and would also send him books on the Civil War.
