Stanley J. "Stan" Walch, age 89, of Winona, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Sauer Healthcare in Winona. Stan was born on June 6, 1924, in Whitewater Township, Winona County, Minn., to Louis and Elizabeth (Schurb) Walch. He was united in marriage with Dorothy F. Koscielski on July 31, 1948, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona. Dorothy preceded him in death on March 8, 2011.

He was a 1941 graduate of Cotter High School. He attended St. Mary's College in Winona and the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. Stan honorably served his country during World War II with the United States Marines.

In 1950, Stan began a career with the Internal Revenue Service District Office in St. Paul, Minn. He was promoted to an Internal Auditor, and later to the role of Supervisory Internal Auditor at which time he was transferred to the IRS Headquarters in Washington, DC. Following retirement from the IRS in 1981, Stan and Dorothy returned to Winona, where Stan subsequently established the Walch Tax Service, retiring again in 1995.

Stan was a member of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, and was a member of the Fourth Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus Council 639 in Winona, where he served as Faithful Navigator, Faithful Comptroller, and with its Honor Guard. He was also a member of the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9, the Hiawatha Valley Marines, and was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Stan is lovingly survived by his children:, John (Marla) Walch, Westbygod, Virginia; Julie (Alan) Beth, Winona; Peter Walch, Cocleysville, Md.; grandchildren, Melissa (Eoin) Tynan, Amanda (Jesse) Lanik, Brian (Kina) Corcoran, Emily Walch, Melissa Walch, and Christopher Walch; great-grandchildren, Zoe Lanik, Molly Tynan, and Declan Corcoran; brother, Eugene (Jane) Walch, Charlotte, N.C.; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; son, James Walch; parents; and his four sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka. The Reverend Monsignor Roy E. Literski will officiate. The Fourth Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus will provide an Honor Guard.

Following the Mass, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Neville-Lien Post #1287 will provide full military honors outside of the Basilica.

Stan will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery in a private family ceremony later this summer.

Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. There will not be any visitation held on Wednesday; please meet at the Basilica for Mass.
