Paul and Julia lived in Furstl Neudorf, Germany after they were married. Paul's great-great-grandson, Rober Stenzel, had the following to say: Of the emigration, this is what was told to us by Lucie Stenzel, wife of Paul C. Stenzel, son of Frank A. Stenzel. "Te crossing of the pond (Atlantic Ocean) took 19 days. The family had enough money to get to Minnesota City, Minnesota. The older sons having come across first had settled down and had jobs to send money for the fares of Paul, Julia and the remaing children." Came to United State in 1884 at age 54. Bought ticket at Kepno, Poland (Kempen, Germany) and on June 1, 1884, boarded the ship called Weiland at Hamburg, Germany. The captain of the ship was Captain Hulsick. A ticket for the voyage from Hamburg to St. Paul cost $54.00. Some ship lines had ship wars, trying to get the most people to travel via their ship lines. Some of the children were given passage for as little as $.50. The voyage took about 2 weeks. They traveled 3rd class. Cabin conditions on the ship were crowded and very uncomfortable. When they landed in New York, they had their immigration papers processed at a building called Castle Garden. Ellis Island, famous for processing immigrants, wasn't constructed until later. One story, true or not, is told that their destination was Minnesota Lake. For some reason, they ended up in Minnesota City. But they found their way back to the Minnesota Lake, Wells area. They first lived with Vincent and Johanna. Paul and Julia lived with Vincent and Thomas until 1887, when they purchased a farm in the Wells, Minnesota area. This farm is now owned by Simon Stenzel, a son of Frank. All but one of the children married; Elizabeth did not. She spent her adult life as a housekeeper for priests. The burial place for most of the original family is St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery in Wells. Joseph was buried in Minnesota Lake and Anton in California. Born: Near Wroctaw, Poland (Breslau, Germany) Death: Saturday morning, January 24, 1914 at 9:40 A.M. at age 84. (Reprinted from Wells Forum/Centennial booklet) Paul Stenzel, an old and highly respected resident of Dunbar Twp, passed away last Saturday morning, January 24th. The Deceased was born in Poland, near the city of Breslow, on March 14th, 1830. He came to this country in 1884 and settled near Minnesota Lake. A few years after he purchased a farm in Dunbar Twp, but after the death of his wife, he went to live with is son, Thomas, where he resided until his death. One of the greatest proofs testifying to the real worth and upright character of any person is just such funeral manifestations as Mr. Paul Stenzel received last Tuesday, January 27th. Probably never in the history of the parish were such imposing funeral services and such great concourse of people observed in St. Casimir church at a burial of any lay person. Everyone in the parish able to attend, honored the funeral of Mr. Paul Stenzel. All seats in the large church were occupied. The services were most solemnly carried out. Religious services are often spoken of as impressive, and with good reason, for everyone who witnessed the funeral services last Tuesday at St. Casimir Church could not fail to be impressed. The remains were met at the entry of the church by the pastor, they were then conducted before the high altar, preceded by the Rosary Society of men carrying lighted candles. Then four priests, vested in surplices and kneeling for some moments before the high altar, chanted in the sanctuary the office for the dead, which lasted for about one half hour. Next in order of solemn requiem Mass was celebrated, with the Pastor Rev. Father Mikolai, as celebrant, Rev. Father Daszkowski, of East Chain, Minnesota as Deacon, Rev. Father Lesches of Rochester, Minnesota as Sub-Deacon, and Rev. Father Fritz, of Easton, Minnesota as Master of Ceremonies. The Minnesota Lake Choir rendered the singing and music. Mass being over the celebrant, accompanied again by the Deacon and Sub-Deacon, gave the ablution at the coffin. Rev. Father Daszkowski then preached a touching sermon dwelling principally on the solid virtues of the deceased, showing how Mr. Stenzel closed a most beautiful life owing no one anything, for he would not contract debts if he could not pay them, nor did he ever offend anyone and therefore neither owed anyone anything morally. In a word a man was being buried whose life could truly be eulogized, and whose virtues may well be copied. Finally when the sermon was finished, the Men's Rosary Society of which Mr. Stenzel was a member recited the Rosary. And after these beautiful prayers for the soul of the deceased were completed, he was laid to rest at St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery. (Notes from Ryan Stencel database) Had 2 more children for Paul & Julianna unknown Stenzel DOB 1/6/1862 DOD bef. 1884 Susanna Stenzel DOB 7/2/1867 DOD unknown, died in Infancy
