"VENERABLE ELBA COUPLE OBSERVE GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY; PIONEER RESIDENTS OF COUNTY. Citizens of the village of Elba joined yesterday in expressing their sincere felicitations to Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Siebenaler, Pioneer residents of the county, on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. Siebenaler is 76 years of age, and Mrs. Siebenaler 72. Hale and hearty despite their advanced age, the venerable couple, who have made Winona county their home since 1875, appeared to thoroughly enjoy the day, taking part in the various observances that had been planned, and receiving congratulations from their many friends. In the morning an anniversary mass was read by the Rev. Father H. A. Boecker at Saint Aloysius Catholic church, and at noon a big dinner was served at the old couple's home ( in the village of Elba) for members of the immediate family. MARRIED IN WINONA. Mr. and Mrs. Siebenaler were married at St. Joseph's church in Winona on April 26, 1875, by the Rev. Father Alois Plut, who preceded the Rt. Rev. Father John Meier, present pastor of the church. After their marriage they settled on a farm on Oak Ridge, where they remained seventeen years, (after) they purchased (that) farm in the town of Elba. Twenty-three years ago (1902) they retired and moved to Elba where they have resided since. Although in advanced age, Mr. and Mrs. Siebenaler do their own housework, and maintain a small garden. BOTH BORN IN LUXEMBOURG. Mathias Siebenaler was born in Luxembourg, on October 27, 1849 and came to America in 1871. Mrs. Siebenaler was born on April 11, 1853, also in Luxembourg, and come to this country in 1874. There were ten children born to this union, five of whom died in infancy (Susanna, Peter, Roman, Henry, and Alouise). One son, J. P. (John Peter) Siebenaler (later changed the spelling to Siebenahler), left his home and family (wife Mary Hayertz and their six Childers Susan, Henry, Edward, Catherine, Rosella, and Dorothy) on August 16, 1923, (with the neighbor girl Laurine Anna Frisch) and his whereabouts are still unknown. The other four Childers are Matthew Siebenaler of Plainview, Nicholas Siebenaler, living in the village on Elba, Mrs. Theodore (Josephine Siebenaler) Hayertz of the village of Altura and Mrs. Michael (Loretta S. Siebenaler) of the village of Elba. there are 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild." (The Winona Republican-Herald, 30 April 1925, 2:3-4; Siebenaler Family History at Winona Historical Society).
